INTRODUCTION

France has an excellent network of motorcaravan stop-overs which quite often have free services and in some cases free electricity!   Though there are different categories of Aires, the "Aire Communales" are usually the best value. They are usually run by the local community, and are really intended to encourage trade in their town - a very good idea!

Campsites are extremely numerous throughout the country, and smaller sites are good value. Municipal sites in particular are usually well run and cheap.

We avoid staying overnight on motorway Aires - there have been too many stories of break-ins, etc. Similarly, we wouldn't stay on Aires in the South of France (Narbonne for instance!) but would stick to campsites in these popular areas.

ALBA LA ROMAINE 07400 (Ardeche) (E 4.59737 / N 44.55321) - Maison De Retraite, Quartier Le Clos. Free parking for 50+ vans on open ground next to vineyard. Signposted, free service point (2E donation requested). Old village with ruined chateau, archeological site. (June 2013).  Index

ALBAS 46140 (Lot) (E 1.23275 / N 44.47481) - Pech de Gal, next to campsite. Free parking for 15+ vans by river, on rough ground. Free water/waste point by campsite entrance. Not very inviting so we moved on. (Sept 2012) Index

ALENCON 61000 (Orne) (E 0.07333 / N 48.42621) - Free aire outside campsite "Camping Geurame" for 4 medium sized vans. Hedged, hardstanding. Free service point (old, but serviceable). We only stayed for lunch, but would have been OK overnight. (Sept 2008).  Index

ALLASSAC 19240 (Correze) (E 1.47348 / N 45.25916) - Free Aire for 4 vans in front of railway station. Free water/waste/electricity (2 points). Nice town, but a bit noisy for a Friday, so we didn't stay. (Sept 2011). Index

ALLOGNY 18110 (Cher) (E 2.32158 / N 47.22855) - Aire Communale, Etang Communal, just off the D944. Open from April to October.  Free parking for 10 vehicles, max. 24 hours. Fresh water, waste, chem. disp.  free. Situated by pretty lake. Quiet, but a bit lonely - we were the only ones there at that time of year. ET. (May 2000). Index

AMBOISE 37400 (Indre Et Loire) (E 0.99021 / N 47.40832) - Ave de Leonardo da Vinci  - free parking in signposted public parking in back street. No services, but quiet at night. OK for overnight stop only. (Sept 2008). Index

ANGE 41400 (Loir Et Cher) (E 1.24331 / N 47.33161) - Aire Communale, Place de la Mairie. Free signposted parking for 20 vans, Services (2E) - electricity free. WC. Hardstanding, but could be muddy in the rain. Level, quiet at night. Max. 1 week, open all year. Small village with pretty church. Cycling around village. ET. (Sept 2008). Index

Parking for 8 vans, slightly sloping, on main road on west side of lake. May be noisy at night.   Very popular, open all year, 1 day max. Service point, 4E. ET. (Sept, 2006). Index

ANNECY - Free parking in Parking Albigny, at Petit Port. (E 6.15578 / N 45.90589) - WC close by, very popular. Nice position, but at night, very noisy, with drunks being a nuisance. We wouldn't stay there again. (June 2008). Index

ARAGNOUET 65170 (Hautes Pyrenees) (E 0.24699 / N 42.78638) - Pont de Moudang. Free public parking at picnic area in wooded area for 6 - 10 vans. Nothing much of interest, so we only stayed for lunch. (May 2016).  Index

ARCHIAC 17520 (Charente Maritime) (E -0.30473/ N 45.52045) - Aire Communale, Place du Champ de Foire . Free reserved parking for 2 vans, (in large public carpark) with free water/waste (Raclet service point) in quiet village. Max 1 day, open all year. ET. (Oct 2008).  Index

ARDRES 62610 (Pas-de-Calais) - Bal Parc Camping, TOURNEHEM-SUR-LA-HEM (03 21 35 65 90). Good access, just off N43 at Nordausques. Good overnight stop for Calais (23Km away). Open all year. CC. 75F/night (Sept 1999). Index

ARNAGE 72230 (Sarthe) (E 0.18431 / N 47.93041) - Free aire for 2 vans next to the river on hardstanding, slight slope. Service point with credit card slot. Path right in front of parking, so it could be a bit busy. We didn't stay overnight, but would probably be OK.  (Sept 2008).  Index

ARREAU 65240 (Hautes Pyrenees) (E 0.35937 / N 42.90724) - Chemin de Frechet, Chateau de Nestes. Dedicated free parking for 20 vans (sign says 2E charge, but no charges made). Free water/waste point, tarmac surface, illuminated, quiet, very popular. Lovely town with lots of scenic walks marked out. We stayed for several days. (May 2016).  Index

AUBIGNY SUR NERE 18700 (Cher) (E 2.45004 / N 47.48194) Aire Communale, Route de la Chapelotte, D7. Free parking for 8 vans by old swimming pool. Free water/waste. Near cycle path into town. Lovely town linked to Scottish heritage and the Stuarts (chateau). Lots of old buildings, nice park. Very quiet at night. (Sept 2011). Index

AUBIGNY SUR NERE (E 2.43888 / N 47.49083) - 2nd aire at Boulevard Guichard. Free water/waste, WC, 3 dedicated parking places, near road entrance. There,s better parking near the picnic area, away from the road. Lorries share the same area so it could be noisy. (Sept 2011). Index

AULT 80460 (Somme) (E 1.45102 / N 50.10361) - Aire Communale, rue Leon Blum. Free parking for 10 vans, level, hardstanding, signposted. Service point - water/2E. Pretty resort. ET. (July 2010). Index

AYTRE 17440 (Charente-Maritime) (E -1.12233 / N 46.11361) - Free parking and services by Windsurfer's Beach. Good cycle paths along coast. Quiet, level, hardstanding, very popular. Wide bays for 10 vans, but quite short - had to overhang curb - no problem. Good location, we stayed a couple of days. (Oct, 2008).   Index

AZAY LE RIDEAU 37190 (Indre Et Loire) (E 0.46992 / N 47.25925) - Free parking for 12 vans outside campsite (24hrs only). Service point (5E jeton at campsite), hardstanding, level. Very popular, quiet at night. Beautiful town with famous chateau.  (Sept 2008). Index

BACCARAT 54120 (Meurthe Et Moselle) (E 6.73969 / N 48.44727) - Free aire by main public carpark for 6 - 8 vans, beside river. Free water/waste. Free electricity, but points only available by water point - too far from parking to be practical. Quiet, grassed, shaded. Very popular. Pretty town. (May 2008). Index

BADEFOLS SUR DORDOGNE 24150 (Dordogne) (E 0.79132 / N 44.84343) - Place de la Mairie. Public car park alongside boulangerie on main road. 10 places, slight slope. WC, service point (water not working). Nothing much there so we didn't stay. (May 2016).  Index

Dedicated parking for 4 vans next to canal and old railway shed. 4E/day (pay at Mairie), free water/waste, 4 electricity points. Gravel surface, signposted, 2 days maximum. Not much there, so we only stayed for lunch. (May 2013). Index

BAR LE DUC 55000 (Meuse) (E 5.16651 / N 48.77528) - Aire Communale, Halte Fluviale. Free parking for 5 vans. Raclet service point, using 2E jetons, though there were water taps by the canal. There was noise at night from the adjacent railway station, but not a problem. The town was quite pretty, with lots of history.  (Sept 2008). Index

OK for visiting Honfleur, but not very attractive position. There also seemed to be some gypsies camped at one end. However, still worth a stop to see the beautiful town. ET. (Sept, 2002).Index

Pretty location which was quiet until 9.00pm, when 3 cars full of boys arrived with beer and boules, staying until 11.30pm. they were no trouble, but we couldn't go to bed until they left - after that, very quiet. Pretty town known for willow furniture making, but ALL shops and cafes are closed up. We felt safe enough there, but decided to move on to somewhere with more facilities. Index
