INTRODUCTION

Germany caters very well for motorcaravanners, both with campsites and with overnight parking ("Stellplatz"). These Stellplatz, (which are in addition to the normal motorway rest-areas where overnighting is allowed), come in all sizes from three to one hundred vehicles and are widely distributed. Some are free, some have a nominal charge of 4 - 7E. They may have services, (again usually a nominal charge, 1 - 2E). They are usually intended to be overnight stops, but certain sites have no time limit. I've noticed in 2003 that several sites have started charging, some with no improvement in services, but others improving towards French municipal site standards.

I have found three very useful books which are available in caravan accessory shops and many bookshops:

STELLPLATZ-ATLAS DEUTSCHLAND (SA) by PRO MOBIL and published by Hallwag International. This comes in two volumes, north and south, each of which costs 34.80DM (in 2001). The south volume contains most of the popular tourist areas, and has details and some photographs of 800+ sites (1200+ in 2003). A selection of these are given a 1 - 2 page write-up, but if your German is a bit dodgy there are simple summaries of the sites, including price, available services etc. The north volume contains 1000+ sites (in 2003), though some of these are duplicated in the south volume.

ADAC STELLPLATZ FUHRER. (SF). Very good guide containing over 1600 stellplatz details. Also some parking places for Austria and Italy.

WOHNMOBIL STELLPLATZE (WS) by Dr Dieter Semmler and published by RID-Verlag, and costing 38.80DM (in 2000). This is a more personal approach, where Dr Semmler details 300 free overnight stops that he has visited in Germany, which are close to motorway exits. The book is organised in motorway order, and details of facilities, etc. are listed for each site.

In addition, I've acquired a booklet called "Die Juzi-Liste" which is produced by J. Zimmerman. I was approached on a stellplatz by someone selling them "door to door". It costs 10DM, and contains details of over 2500 stellplatze - very good value! Details can be found at www.stellplatzliste.de.

AMBERG 92224 (BAVARIA) (E 11.84417 / N 49.44444) - Free motorcaravan park for approx. 20 vans at the Fachhochschule in Infanteriestrasse. Very quiet. Lovely old town and river. Holiday Clean at Cleanpark. SA. (May 2002).  Index

AMORBACH 63916 (BAVARIA) (E 9.22384 / N 49.64591) - Dr Fruendt Strasse - Free parking for 5 vans in Bus park. Signposted, illuminated, WC. No services. Open all year. (Oct 2013). Index

ANSBACH 91522 (BAVARIA) - designated motorcaravan parking area at motorway services - security guard patrols at night. Traffic noise. Clean toilets. Useful overnight stop. 10DM (10DM voucher given towards meal at services). (Sept 1999). Index

ARNSTEIN 97450 (BAVARIA) (E 9.95927 / N 49.97674) - Weyermuhlweg. Free stellplatz for 10 vans by old swimming pool. Service point, water 1E, free waste disposal, electricity 1E (4x). Signposted, no lights, quiet (some railway noise in day). Small town with nice park, cycle paths - not much else. (Sept 2013). Index 

ASCHAFFENBURG 63701 (BAVARIA) (E 9.13803 / N 49.96998) - Grossostheimer Strasse. Designated motorcaravan parking by the side of the river Main, alongside the Volkfestplatz. No fixed charge, but donation box at entrance. Space for 20 - 30 vans, level,shaded, illuminated, quiet at night. Water/waste point (donation box) approx. 0.5Km away at edge of Volkfestplatz. Some electricity points (0.5E/Kwh). Lovely town with castle on edge of river. Very good cycle tracks go right past stellplatz, following the river, and going to beautiful parks. Ice cream van visits the site.  SF. (May 2007). Index

ASCHAU 83229 (BAVARIA) (E 12.32231 / N 47.76698) - Free motorcaravan area at pretty location in the grounds of the "Festhalle", directly below the castle. No facilities. Seemed a quiet spot, but avoid on Fridays as there is a disco held opposite, and as the night progressed, more youngsters arrived in cars. Eventually we packed up and moved to a car park within the town (no signs banning, but really only for cars. Luckily our van is only 17 feet long). WS. (July 2000). Index

BACKNANG 71522 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 9.45298 / N 48.95034) - Gartenstrasse. Free dedicated parking for 4 vans on green by mineralfreibad. Service point, water 1E. Grass, signposted, quiet at night (though we woke to the sound of camels! - a circus was set up 300 yards away).  The town didn't seem to be very interesting, but there was a nice walk along the river. (Oct 2010). Index

BAD SALZSCHLIRF 36364 (HESSEN) (E 9.50403 / N 50.62295) - Riedstrasse. Free parking for 6 vans near Kurpark. Signposted, illuminated, gravel surface. Sani Station service point, water 1E, waste disposal 1E, Electricity (6x). Pretty parks, hotels. Nice stopover. (Sept 2013). Index

BAD TEINACH 75385 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 8.69238 / N 48.68925) - Free parking for 20 vans at swimming pool car park. 24 hours only. No facilities but there is a waterworks next door. Pretty spa town with lovely walks.  SA. (Sept 2001). Index

BAD WILDUNGEN 34521 (HESSEN) (E 9.13647 / N 51.12062) - Am Bahnhof. Designated Stellplatz by railway station. (End of line, so noise not a problem). 17 parking places separated by hedges, some with shade. Hardstanding, electricity (1E/2 Kwh), illuminated, level. Water/waste point, (water 1E/45L). 1E/kurtax/night , donation box. Nice old spa town with lovely gardens and spa centre, with 3 types of mineral water available - we stayed several days, taking the waters. Good cycle tracks up into the gardens. Many half timbered houses. SF. (May, 2007). Index

BAD WIMPFEN 74206  (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 9.15243 / N 49.23367) - An Der Alte Saline - Reserved parking in Spa car park. Space for 8 - 10 vans, 8E/day including services. Tarmac surface, illuminated. Beautiful town with many old buildings. (Sept 2014).  Index

BALINGEN 72336 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 9.03221 / N 53.39811) - Heinzlen Strasse. Free dedicated parking for 8 vans behind hedges, near swimming pool. Sani station service point, water 1E/80 litres, electricity 0.5E/Kwh (8 points). The service looked little used, and was covered with moss. Nice town with plenty of shops and a pretty museum. (Oct 2010). Index

BAMBERG 96001 (BAVARIA) - Parking in Park + Ride car park, Heinrichsdamm (south east part of Bamberg). No facilities, 24 hours only. Useful stop-off to see Bamberg, a beautiful town with a half timbered town hall built on a bridge between the two halves of the town. 2DM/night. SA. (July 2000). Index

BAUNACH 96148 (BAVARIA) (E 10.85587 / N 49.98931) - Free motorcaravan park at Altstadtparkplatz. No services. Normally quiet location by river (shaded) - we made the mistake of staying on a Friday night - noisy! Pretty town - good overnight stop. SA. (May 2002).  Index

BEILNGRIES 92339 (BAVARIA) (E 11.47422 / N 49.03456) - Parkplatz am Hafen. Carpark by canal, unofficial, but no problem (there may be in high season). Lovely spot, nice walks, WC, Info Centre, but no services. Nice town, we went to Fischfest in evening - fish meals, beer and group. (June 2003).  Index

BERGHEIM 50126 (NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN) (E 6.61222 / N 50.96387) - free parking for 8 motorcaravans (signposted), though it was full of cars when we arrived, as there was a children's sports day organised in the adjacent castle (Schloss Paffendorf), but a lot quieter in the evening. 5 portable WCs, otherwise no services. Beautiful parkland around castle. (May 2009).  Index

BINGEN 55411 (RHEINLAND PFALZ) (E 7.89253 / N 49.97011) - Free parking in public car park at Yacht Hafen, near ferry quay. Good views, quiet apart from ferry docking! No services (there are services at Stellplatz further up from town. Lovely walks and cycle paths along the Rhine. (May 2009). Index

BLANKENHEIM 53945 (NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN) - Free motorcaravan park (no overnight parking for caravans) with approx. 50 places, situated next to small lake and tennis courts. Service point - chem. disp/fresh water 1Dm, Electricity 1Dm. Pretty location in a small half-timbered town overlooked by a Schloss, now used as a youth hostel.  ET. (July 2000). Index

BLAUBEUREN 89143 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 9.79008 / N 48.41551) - Motorcaravan park at Sports Hall P6 -  5E/night, Sani-station - 1E. Space for 15 vans, shaded, level. Well signposted. Pretty town, nice walks, watermill. SA. (June 2003). Index

BLUMBERG 78176 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) - 1) P1, Werner Gerber Sportzcentrum. Free park for 10 - 15 vehicles at entrance to the town, next to the sport centre. Parking up to 48 hours, free chem. disposal and fresh water.  SA. (Sept 2001). Index

2) There is also another parking area (P2) next to a railway museum (Zollhaus) half a mile before the town, with space for up to 10 vehicles, again for 48 hours, but no services. SA (Sept 2001).  Index

BOBLINGEN 71032 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 8.42667 / N 53.34425) - Rudolf Diesel Strasse. Free parking in public car park near sports centre, for 30 vans. Free water/waste point. Signposted, hardstanding, illuminated. Nice walk/cycle path through park by lake to the town. (Sept 2010). Index

BORKEN 46325 (NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN) (E 6.86376 / N 51.83735) - Free parking by "Aquariusbad" leisure centre. Signposted, grassed, level, shaded. Space fo 20 vans, quiet. No services. Ok for stopover on the way north. Open all year. SF. (June, 2006).  Index

BREISACH 79200 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) - Free motorcaravan park in the Josef-Bueb Strasse Parkplatz (stated as 10DM in SA!) for up to 40 motorcaravans. Sani-station services adjacent (2DM waste, 2DM fresh water). Very popular with all nationalities. Lovely location on the Rhine, and below a very pretty town. Allowed to stay up to three days. A quiet location, apart from some youngsters playing loud music in the early hours. ET/SA. (Aug 2000). Index

BRODENBACH 56332 (RHEINLAND PFALZ) (E 7.44364 / N 50.22566) - Parkplatz Salzwiese. Free reserved parking, signposted off main road alongside river Mosel. Quiet at night with occasional train noise from other side of river - not a problem. Tarmaced, level, with some shading by trees. No services, but free water/waste across river in Lof (about a mile away). Lovely town with beautiful views of the Mosel, and good walks and cycle paths along the river. We stayed a couple of days, exploring and found other informal parking along the river. SF. (Sept 2007). Index

BRUCHSAL 76646 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 8.58914 / N 49.13231) - free reserved parking for 2 vans on public car park by sports ground. No services. A bit exposed, but quiet after 11pm. 5 minutes walk from castle gardens and town. (June 2009). Index

BUREN 33142 (NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN) (E 8.56388 / N 51.54983) - Aftestrasse. Free parking for 6 vans on public carpark by river, below town. 8 Electricity points 1E/8 hours. St San service point - free waste, fresh water (jeton). Asphalt surface, signposted. (Sept 2013). Index

BURGBERNHEIM 91593 (BAVARIA) (E 10.32068 / N 49.44621) - reserved motorcaravan park next to the open air swimming pool. Room for 8 vans, Holiday Cleany service point, free waste water disposal, 0.5E/electricity, 0.5E/fresh water. Free toilets. Quiet (apart from frogs at night), level, signposted (small!). Small town with pretty church.  SF. (June, 2007). Index

BURGSTADT 63927 (BAVARIA) (E 9.26417 / N 49.71361) - Vinzerfestplatz, Josef Ullrich Strasse. Free stellplatz for 20 vans by river Main, next to cycle path. Very clean and quiet town. St San service point, water 1E, electricity 1E/6 hours. Signposted. Good stopover, near Miltenberg. (Oct 2013). Index

CELLE 29221 (NIEDERSACHSEN) (E 10.07531 / N 52.62644) Am Schutzenplatz, Hafenstrasse. Free parking for 50-60 vans on open ground. Lorries active in daytime, but quiet at night. WC next to Holiday Clean service point at end of parkplace. 1E/water, free waste water. Beautiful old town - well worth a visit. Very popular. (June 2012). Index

CLOPPENBURG 49661 (NIEDERSACHSEN) (E 8.05481 / N 52.85271) - Free parking in museum grounds, dedicated for 10 - 15 vans, 1 day max. No services. Shaded by trees, quiet. OK for overnight stop. (June 2012). Index

COBURG 96450 (BAVARIA) (E 10.96325 / N 50.25405) - Free parking for 5 vans in Grossparkplatz "Anger", in a reserved corner of a large car park. Sani-station in petrol station "Aral Tankstelle" in Bambergerstrasse. Lovely old town with lots of old buildings - nice walk through park to fortress. Parking place can be noisy at night (teenagers). There is also a large function tent erected for beer festivals etc. (There's another parking place at the swimming pool - further out of town). SA. (May 2002). Index

DELMENHORST 27749 (NIEDERSACHSEN) (E 8.62361 / N 53.04722) - Reisemobilhafen Delmenhorst, An der Graften. Free parking in public car park by swimming pool (Delfina) and municipal park. Free water/waste facility (a bit the worse for wear), recycling bins etc. We didn't stay as it was too crowded with cars, and there was no other company. SF. (June, 2006).  Index

DETTENHEIM 76706 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 8.43159 / N 49.14361) - free parking at Kartbahn for 20 vans, beside racetrack. Free St San service point, electricity points also available. Too noisy for us, although it may quieten down at night. Also away from the town, so we didn't stay. Ideal if you like Go-karting! (June 2009). Index

DIEMELSTADT 34474 (HESSEN) (E 9.00667 / N 51.50611) - Steinberg Stadtpark. Free parking by leisure centre for 4 vans. No services. gravel surface. (Sept 2013). Index

DONAUWORTH 86609 (BAVARIA) (E 10.77909 / N 48.71501) - Festplatz, Neue Obermeyerstrasse. Free parking for 20 vans, maximum 5 days. ST San service point, water 1E, Electricity 1E/8 hours. Lovely town, with good cycling, we stayed for 3 days. (June 2011). Index

DORSTEN 46284 (NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN) (E 6.96771 / N 51.66516) - free park for 20 vans, level, illuminated, electricity (1E for 10hrs), rubbish bins. Hardstanding, but could be messy in wet weather.  Sani Station by swimming pool (0.5Km away). Situated between river Lippe and a canal. Nice town with good shops. We were approached by Tourist Info lady with brochures, maps, etc. - very friendly. Bread delivery in morning. (May 2005). Index

DUDERSTADT 37115 (NIEDERSACHSEN) (E 10.27179 / N 51.51061) - P & R Parkplatz, Adenauerring. Free parking, Sani-Station service point, 1E water, 1E waste. Level, hedged, (some overgrown). Open all year. Beautiful old walled town, nice walks through parkland to altstadt. (May 2005). Index

EBERBACH 69412 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 8.98652 / N 49.46007) - free parking beside the Neckar for 4 vans, but the bays are quite long, so there is doubling up. No parking allowed in the rest of the carpark. No services, but very popular. Quiet at night. Lovely town. (Oct 2013). Index

(E 8.97447 / N 49.46222) - In Der Au. Free parking by sports centre, with service point. Water 1E, free waste disposal. Electricity points at separate location 200m away. Not very inviting. (Oct 2013).  Index

EBERN 96106 (BAVARIA) (E 10.79393 / N 50.09156) - Motorcaravan park next to town wall (5E/night). Large area, (40-50 vans), WC, shower, chem disp. water, elec. inc. (Ticket collector issues key to WC/shower, and connects to elec.point). Pretty old town, lovely main street. We were recommended to try the meals in a Gasthof - LAURENTIUS-STUBCHEN, by a German motorcaravanner, and he was dead right - lovely meals too large to finish, and cheap beer! SA. (June 2003). Index

ECKENHAGEN 51580 (NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN) (E 7.69485 / N 50.98758) Rodener Platz. Free parking for 5 vans, quiet, slight slope. There was a service point specified in the book, but we couldn't find it. Pleasant little town with small Kurpark. OK for overnight stop. SF. (May, 2007). Index

EDENKOBEN 67480 (RHEINLAND PFALZ) (E 8.12623 / N 49.28218) - motorcaravan park for up to 50 vans (hardstanding). Very popular with Germans.  5DM for parking, 1DM for Holiday Clean Services (40 litres water). Close to town centre with shops, restaurants etc.  SA. (Sept 2001).Index

ELTMANN 97483 (BAVARIA) (E 10.66156 / N 49.97293) Parkplatz Mainlande. Free signposted parking next to river Main. No services (supposed to be water outlet, but I couldn't find it), but nice location. Good cycle path along river. Centre of town quite busy for traffic. Open all year. SF. (June 2007). Index

EICHSTATT 85072 (BAVARIA) (E 11.19816 / N 48.88401) - Motorcaravan park at Volkfestplatz (6E/night, inc. elec.). Lovely spot next to river. WC, shower, service point (at entrance,- 200M away). Level, shaded, very popular. Nice walk along river (0.25 mile) to beautiful old cathedral town. Nice park. We stayed two days. (June 2003). Index

EINBECK 37574 (NIEDERSACHSEN) (E 9.87404 / N 51.81675) - Ochsenhofweg 11. Free parking by swimming pool for 20 vans, fenced off, signposted. Sani Station, 1E/fresh water, 1E/waste water. Lots of electricity points, 0.5E/Kwh. Beautiful town with lots of old buildings. (June 2012). Index

ERBACH 64711 (HESSEN) (E 8.98875 / N 49.66338) - Free parking for 5 vans by Alexandersbad swimming pool, next to cycle path. 3 days maximum. Sanistation service point - water 1E, electricity 0.5E. Noisy at night, but no trouble. Pretty town. (Sept 2015). Index

ETTLINGEN 76275 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 8.41747 / N 48.93581) - Schollbronner Strasse. Free dedicated parking for 10 vans near swimming pool. FREYUNG 94078 (BAVARIA) (E 13.54113 / N 48.80542) - 2 parking places in this pretty town above Passau. One at P1, near the swimming pool, slightly sloping, near the Passau road, but close to the town. The other is at the ski lifts, further away from the town (1Km), level shaded, and quiet, with a WC. There are no services at the parking places, but you can use the "Klarenlage" (water works) facilities. Lovely surrounding scenery of the Bavarian forest. SA. (May 2002).

Beautiful small town with lovely walks and a nice Kurpark, with spa waters (for paddling - ice-cold!). Level, some shade, no services (we got some water from the Info Centre). We did get fresh water the next day at "Frankana", a camping shop between Marktbreit and Ochsenfurt - ask at reception. Marktbreit is a quiet little town with a beautiful old gateway and buildings. Reach there via the underpass adjacent to the parking area, as the level crossing on the main street seemed to be permanently closed. Only one other van while we were there, so a bit lonely! SINGEN 78224 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 8.81884 / N 47.76761) - Free parking in car park at base of ruined castle (Hohentwiel), approx. 4Km off A81 at Singen. This was not an official site, but there were no problems, and two or three German motorcaravanners were also parked there. There was an information centre next door, which opened in the morning, with toilets and fresh water. Nice walks up to the ruined castle on a pinnacle overlooking lovely countryside. WS. (Aug 2000). Ulm is a beautiful town with an old quarter and a magnificent cathedral. Services are provided by a "Holiday Clean" (1DM).  3 days maximum stay, will accommodate approx. 20 motorcaravans. VALLENDAR 56179 (RHEINLAND PFALZ) (7.61218 / N 50.39745) - Parkplatz Am Rheinufer. Free reserved motorcaravan parking, marked for 3 vans (only 2 would fit!), by buses, at end of public car park. Good views overlooking the Rhine, but very noisy throughout the day and night. Situated by a busy railway line - express trains all night! Also car park busy in night - revving etc. Free water (not very pure). There was also supposed to be free waste disposal but I couldn't find it. Two ways to access to the car park,- if over 3M high, go over the railway line, or, if under 3M, there is a signposted underpass further on. OK if you're stuck for somewhere to stay, but I wouldn't stay again through choice. SF. (Sept 2007).  Index

VILLINGEN-SCHWENNINGEN 78054 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) (E 8.53522 / N 48.04952) - Messegelande, Waldeckweg, Schwenningen. 5 free parking places outside the  Exhibition Centre in Schwenningen. Holiday Clean services available (sign for 1DM, but appeared to be free). Slightly scruffy surroundings, and noise from the beer warehouse next door until 23.00 hours! OK to overnight park in order to see the very pretty town of Villingen, but I wouldn't stay again, unless stuck. SA. (Sept 2001).  Index

(the castle seemed to be used by the music students - we could hear them practice in the towers). (July 2000). Index

WEILBURG AN DER LAHN 35781 (HESSEN) (E 8.25975 / N 50.48775) - Large motorcaravan park next to the river Lahn (no direct access) and the fire station. 6E/night, inc. toilet,water, chem disp. electricity (if you could reach it! - we didn't try). Facilities were locked up most of day   - only open when attendant present. Quiet, level, shaded, but we felt overpriced compared to other sites. Lovely walled town, with castle overlooking river. WEINHEIM 69469 (BADEN-WURTTEMBERG) - Free motorcaravan park (2 places only) at VW "Stocker" concession on Vierheimer Strasse. Service point (Sani-station) - 1Dm drinking water, 1Dm waste. Fairly noisy until showroom closes - OK after. Good stopover before Heidelberg.  About 1 mile from centre of Weinheim, a pretty town with many old buildings, beautiful square and castle park. ET. The service point was out of order (being changed to Euros). - 3 reserved parking places. Excellent facilities in town (ice-rink, tennis etc). Avoid on Friday or Saturday, as Disco is next door! SA. Sani station (1.5E) at other side of park. Nice parking on hot day but later on got too dark, so moved to second site in town. SA. (June 2003).  Index

WORMS 67547 (RHEINLAND PFALZ) (E 8.37487 / N 49.63217) - Free motorcaravan park for 30 vehicles (max. 2 days), close to the Rhine. A service point is available 200m away at the Gasthof Hagenau (1Dm for 100 litres of water). Good walks by the Rhine, excellent shops, cathedral in the town. Some noise from river barges, but not a real problem. ET. (Sept 2001). Index

WURZBURG 97018 (BAVARIA) - Free parking on quayside car park facing "Kapelle" (beautiful old church) on opposite side of river Main. Lovely views. No facilities, but free service point (chem. disp. and fresh water) at BP garage on Mergentheimer Strasse (parallel to south side of river).  Wurzburg has some lovely old buildings and a large castle overlooking the old bridge covered with statues.  We had a quiet night, but were awoken at 6.00am by a massive Swiss cruiser moored right by us!
